Poway Rodeo is fun for the entire family with several opportunities for kids to participate in our Jr. Rodeo events or simply enjoy the extra activities created just for them!
Junior Barrel Racing
Are you aspiring to become a professional barrel racer? We invite you to compete for the fastest time during the Jr. Barrel Racing event at the Poway Rodeo. The top three times will receive an awards buckle.

RULES and REGULATIONS
The Poway Rodeo Junior Barrel Qualifying event will be a 5D format with full second splits. We will be taking the top 4 in each division & bottom 5 Rookies to qualify to compete in Jr. Barrels at Poway Rodeo (September 26 and 27th)

Youth 5D Jackpot will run directly following the Open
- Youth Age 17 and under as of 9/26/25
- Must be ready to run directly following the open jackpot, draw will be established day of once entries have closed
- The top 4 in each division and the bottom 5 in Rookies will be offered a spot in one of the three Poway Rodeo Performances (Sept. 26 and 27th)

- Youth can run in the open and carry over, or just run in the youth
Exhibitions: $ 5.00 each

If you want to be considered for the Poway Rodeo Junior Barrel, Youth MUST declare this prior to the race! This will be the only way we know you want to qualify for the Poway Rodeo.
- If you need to draw out, you must do so 24 hours prior to the event, or you will be responsible for your fees
- All Pre-Entries must be checked in and paid before you run
- All Pre-Entries must be checked in and paid by 5 PM, regardless of how late you are in the draw.
- Late Entries will be taken on site until 6 PM
Youth Side Pot Ground Rules:
- If you hit a barrel or go off course while making your Open run, you will be allowed to run again at the completion of the Open Jackpot in the Youth Category
- You must inform the office staff that you would like to run again, or your parent/guardian can inform the office crew
- The Youth Riders that will run again will be a random draw and not necessarily in the order that you were in the Open, so listen to be called by name
- If you do run again, your time only counts for the Youth side pot and does not carry back to the Open
The spirit of these ground rules is to ensure that all of the youth contestants have a fair go at qualifying to run in a performance of the Poway Rodeo.
Payout:
We will be using a payout that will ensure the last hole in the 5-D receives close to their entry fees back. The payout will be a 70% (NBHA type) payout. Results will be posted on social media on the events page or on one of the Admins Facebook Pages.
Awards and Winnings:
All money and prizes will be available to be picked up at the completion of the jackpot. If you cannot be present, please designate someone to pick up for you. Prizes and money will not be shipped.
Qualifiers for the Poway Rodeo Jr. Barrel Race:
- All riders must wear jeans, boots, long-sleeve shirts, and an approved riding helmet.
- Must be age 17 or under by September 26, 2025
- You may be required to provide proof of age verification
- There will be a $50 entry fee for the Poway Rodeo Junior Barrel Race entryo Includes 2 codes for the value of two Poway Rodeo General Admission Tickets to the rodeo – one for the contestants; one for a parent or guardian to be with contestant in the back.
- You will be required to provide:

Proof of insurance - We will be accepting signatures and payments online via a link
- You are not accepted until all forms are complete and payment is made.
The entry fee is non-refundable. - There will be a raffle entry for the rodeo performance after qualification
Darci Van Meter, Arena Director, will be in touch with all the qualifiers and will ask for preferences.
We will have your date to ride by July 30 th so family/friends can purchase tickets in advance. - No lead line allowed
- The Arena Director has the right to disqualify a rider based on the lack of safety of the rider or the surroundings.
- Parents, trainers, etc. are not allowed in the arena during the performance
All final decisions are up to the Producers.

Mutton Busting

We are looking for a few little cowgirls and cowboys for our most anticipated event, Mutton Bustin’! Local kids have an opportunity at real rodeo action by riding a mutton (sheep) during each of the performances of the Poway Rodeo. Each child will receive a participation buckle and the winner will receive a gift card from Justin for a pair of Justin boots!
Mutton Busting Rules and Regulations
- 12 riders are allotted for each of the three performances, Friday, September 27 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, September 28 at 1:00 and 7:30 pm.
- All riders must wear jeans, boots, and long-sleeve shirts (PRCA Arena Requirements) and wear an approved riding helmet. Justin will be providing vests and helmets.
- Must weigh 50 pounds or less on the date of ride and be at least four years of age.
- Walk through will be at 6:00 PM Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the rodeo grounds (Poway Valley Riders Association, 14336 Tierra Bonita Rd., Poway). The riders will see the sheep and the chutes at that time. We will explain the entire process and requirements. At least one parent and the child must attend. Weigh in of all riders will be done at this time. Non-attendance at this meeting may void the riding date.
- Parents, trainers, etc. are not allowed in the arena during the performance.
- There is a $50.00 entry fee for Mutton Busters. Payment will be made online at the time of application. The entry fee is nonrefundable.
- Any products used to help the rider stay in place is prohibited.
- The rodeo reserves the right to disqualify a rider based on the lack of safety of the rider or surroundings. This includes the unwillingness of the rider to ride.
Entries will open at 8:00 am on Thursday, August 1, 2024. We will announce your performance date by September 5th. Once your application has been accepted and you receive your performance date, the rider will receive two general admission rodeo voucher codes, one for the rider and one for a parent, guardian or guest.
